Clean hydrogen fuel is key to this energy strategy. Canada is one of the top 10 hydrogen producers in the world, and a leader in fuel cell technology and energy distribution. Hydrogen is the lowest carbon fuel, and is essential to decarbonizing the top third of Canada’s most energy intensive industrial applications.
Canada has what it takes to develop a competitive and sustainable hydrogen economy. The modernization of Canada's energy systems will leverage Canadians' expertise to build new infrastructure as a backbone for a low-carbon energy ecosystem across Canada. Hydrogen could deliver up to 30% of Canada’s end-use energy by 2050.
As of January 2022, Canada has seven hydrogen refueling stations, operated by HTEC, Hydrogenics, Esso and Shell. Additional stations are being developed for remote areas beyond the electric grid.
